Viscous product from activated sludge by methanol fermentation.

چکیده
Aeration of activated sludge with 3 to 4% added methanol for 5 to 7 days yields an odorless, highly viscous (5,000 to 10,000 centipoise), black, pudding-like product containing glycan(s) linked other than alpha-1-4 or beta-1-3. Backseeding gives maximum thickening in 3 to 4 days. Incomplete acid hydrolysis of the black product gives a 0.27% solution of reducing sugars (75% glucose) which is an 11.4% yield from the added methanol. Backseeding into either centrifuge supernatant or 0.1% yeast extract in tap water gives a light-colored polymer. Viscosity decreases during extended sterile cold storage. A 5% salt addition lowers viscosity one-half. From 6 to 12 colony types appear on plating backseeded media, but none of these isolates is a reliable polymer former.

Effects of extracts derived from pistachio by-products on ruminal fermentation and methane production
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different doses of pistachio by-product (PBP) extracts supplemented with alfalfa hay (AH) or barley grain (BG) on microbial fermentation in an in vitro fermentation system. The total extracted phenolic compounds were 36.96, 65.78, 67.02 and 8.85% and total extracted tannin contents were 37.11, 59.64, 56.87 and 7.55% when PBP was extract...
متن کاملFermentation of Aerobically Slaughterhouse Sludge for Purposes
Aerobically activated sludge from a pig slaughterhouse wastewater-treatment plant was mixed with 0.35 or 0.5% (wtlwt) dextrose, with 0.5% (wtlwt) dextrose and 0.05 or 0.2% (vlv) f ormic acid, or with 2.5% (wtlwt) molasses and 0.1% (v/v) formic acid, and was pasteurized at 95°C for 5 min. After cooling to approximately 20°C the sludge was inoculated with l@-lo7 cfu Lactobacillus plantarum/g slud...
متن کاملWaste-Activated Sludge Fermentation for Polyacrylamide Biodegradation Improved by Anaerobic Hydrolysis and Key Microorganisms Involved in Biological Polyacrylamide Removal
During the anaerobic digestion of dewatered sludge, polyacrylamide (PAM), a chemical conditioner, can usually be consumed as a carbon and nitrogen source along with other organic matter (e.g., proteins and carbohydrates in the sludge). However, a significant accumulation of acrylamide monomers (AMs) was observed during the PAM biodegradation process. To improve the anaerobic hydrolysis of PAM, ...
متن کاملOptimization of Sludge Carbon Source Recovery from Waste Activated Sludge Thermo-alkaline Hydrolysis and Short-cut Fermentation Process
Organic products generated from waste activated sludge hydrolysis and fermentation process could be used as supplementary carbon source for enhanced biological nutrient removal. However, accompanied with organics production, large amount of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and soluble orthophosphorus (SOP) released, which would be negative to the reutilization of sludge carbon source. In this study, b...
متن کاملA new process to improve short-chain fatty acids and bio-methane generation from waste activated sludge.
As an important intermediate product, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) can be generated after hydrolysis and acidification from waste activated sludge, and then can be transformed to methane during anaerobic digestion process. In order to obtain more SCFA and methane, most studies in literatures were centered on enhancing the hydrolysis of sludge anaerobic digestion which was proved as un-effici...
